Yoga Nidra – One of the Most Effective Practices for Your Nervous System
Yoga Nidra is often translated as "yogic sleep" – you simply lie down, close your eyes, and follow a voice. Sounds simple. In a way, it is. But beneath the surface, quite a lot is happening: in your nervous system, in your brain, and – according to the Ayurvedic tradition – on a more subtle level of the body as well. I want to show you here why Yoga Nidra has become my absolute favourite practice when it comes to nervous system regulation.

The Vagus Nerve: Your Direct Line to Calm
The vagus nerve is the longest nerve of your autonomic nervous system. It connects your brain to your heart, lungs, and digestive tract – and it's the central nerve of your parasympathetic nervous system, the part responsible for rest, digestion, and regeneration (as opposed to the sympathetic nervous system, your "fight or flight" response).
A large portion of the vagus nerve consists of afferent fibres – meaning it doesn't just send signals from the brain to the body, but predominantly the other way around, from the body back to the brain. Roughly 80% of its fibres run in this direction. This means: how you perceive your body directly influences how active your vagus nerve is – and, in turn, how easily your nervous system can settle into a state of rest.
This is exactly where Yoga Nidra comes in, on several levels:
The Body Scan (Rotation of Consciousness): At the heart of every Yoga Nidra practice is the so-called "rotation of consciousness" – you move your attention systematically through different parts of the body. This kind of deliberate, calm inward attention is what research calls interoception, and it's closely linked to vagal activity: the more attention you consciously direct inward, the more afferent signals travel via the vagus nerve to the brain – a loop that supports parasympathetic activity.
Breath Awareness:
Conscious observation of the breath – often woven into the rotation of consciousness – also acts directly on the vagus nerve. Slow, deep breathing with an emphasised, extended exhale in particular activates the vagus nerve through a mechanism known in physiology as respiratory sinus arrhythmia: vagal activity rises during exhalation, heart rate drops slightly – your body receives the signal that it's safe.
Marma Points:
In some Yoga Nidra traditions, the rotation of consciousness is complemented or inspired by the knowledge of marma points from Ayurveda. Marma points are specific locations on the body described as energetically significant junctions – where muscles, vessels, ligaments, and nerve pathways meet – as far back as the Sushruta Samhita, one of the oldest foundational texts of Ayurveda. Traditionally, 107 such points are counted on the body; the "108th" is not considered a physical point in the teaching, but the mind itself.
Whether and exactly how marma points relate physiologically to the vagus nerve hasn't been scientifically studied – this is a piece of traditional Ayurvedic knowledge, not an established mechanism in the Western scientific sense. What can be said, though: the deliberate, point-by-point movement of attention through the body – whether along marma points or in the form of a classic body journey – is exactly the kind of focused interoception that modern research links to increased vagal activity.
What Happens in Your Brain: From Beta to Theta
Beyond the nervous system, Yoga Nidra also measurably changes brain activity. Put simply, an awake, active mind moves through different so-called brainwave states, which differ in their frequency:
Beta – your normal waking state: active, alert, often tense or in "doing mode."
Alpha – a relaxed but awake state, such as the one that arises during daydreaming or right after closing your eyes.
Theta – a state of deep relaxation, often described as the threshold between wakefulness and sleep; many meditative and creative states are found here too.
Delta – the deepest level, typically associated with deep sleep.
Yoga Nidra deliberately guides you from beta through alpha into a theta state – and sometimes close to the threshold of delta, without you actually falling asleep. That's exactly what makes the practice so special: you're "awake enough" to follow the voice, yet relaxed enough that your nervous system reaches a state it would otherwise only access during sleep. Some call this "conscious sleep" for that reason.
Interestingly, theta states are also linked to memory consolidation and learning processes in the hippocampus – one reason why Yoga Nidra is described by some not just as calming, but as supportive of processing and mental clarity.
What the Research Shows So Far
Scientific investigation of Yoga Nidra is still a young field, but there are already some insightful studies:
A dissertation from the Bundeswehr University Munich (Moszeik, 2023) examined the effects of an 11-minute short form of Yoga Nidra compared to a control group and found measurable, if small, positive effects on emotional wellbeing.
A pilot study by India's Armed Forces Medical College (Datta, 2023) followed 41 Yoga Nidra beginners in a sleep lab; cognitive scores improved after just two weeks.
A randomised controlled trial with 150 women experiencing menstrual irregularities found improved general psychological wellbeing after a six-month Yoga Nidra programme.
Yoga Nidra is also increasingly being studied as a complementary method in cancer care, partly due to its accessibility for people with physical limitations – the practice is done entirely lying down.
The body of research is growing but is still limited, as is often the case with mindfulness-based practices. What does show up consistently, though: even short, regular sessions are enough to produce initial effects. You don't need to lie down for an hour – 11 to 20 minutes is often plenty.
Why I Love Yoga Nidra So Much
For me, Yoga Nidra connects exactly what I find so fascinating about working with the nervous system: a thousands-year-old tradition that describes, with remarkable precision, what modern neuroscience is confirming piece by piece today. You don't have to achieve anything, optimise anything, or get anywhere. You simply lie there – and that's exactly the point.
